Pierce Freelon is a musician, professor and social entrepreneur. He is the creator of Blackspace - a digital makerspace based in Durham, North Carolina; and the co-founder of the Emmy-award inning PBS web-series Beat Making Lab. He has taught in the Departments of Music and of African, African American and Diaspora Studies at UNC Chapel Hill, and is the leader/emcee in the jazz/hip hop band The Beast.

 

Blackspace is a free digital makerspace for Black youth. Based in Durham, North Carolina, Blackspace provides free digital media programs in beat making, computer graphics, videography and radio, with a focus on STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and math) curriculums and social entrepreneurship.
